Avoid material delays

Choose major fixtures, tile and specialty glass early. Ask which items must arrive before demolition starts and who is responsible for deliveries.

Plan household access

If there is only one bathroom, discuss which facilities remain available and what happens during utility interruptions. Obtain a project-specific schedule rather than relying on a universal number of days.

What must happen before tiling

The substrate must be appropriate for the selected waterproofing and finish system. Shower bases, niches, penetrations and changes in floor level require coordinated details; different materials can have manufacturer-specific installation and curing guidance. If inspections are required, access to the work may need to remain available until approved. Rushing to close walls or tile prematurely can cause expensive rework, which is why the sequence should be reflected in the agreed schedule.

Questions for the kickoff meeting

Confirm who will move furnishings, how dust and demolition debris will be controlled, whether access to other rooms is affected and which materials you need to supply. Ask for a communication channel for discoveries behind existing walls and for a clear process to approve changes. If two bathrooms are being renovated, discuss whether staggering them could preserve at least one usable facility.
